To bring more attention to libraries and what they have to offer, the Lafayette County Librarians would like to introduce you to all of the librarians in the county. Each of the eight public librarian directors in Lafayette County will answer a short Q&A to introduce themselves to everyone.
The third librarian is Megan Flatley, who has been the library director at the Hazel Green Public Library for over 11 years.
Name: Megan Flatley
How long have you been the director? 11.5 years
Tell us about something special in your library collection? While it isn’t something that can be checked out, we have digitization equipment that the public will be able to use. We started this project to allow people to keep possession of their historical items and not have to pay to ship them to a company somewhere. Patrons will be instructed on how to transfer their own (non-commercial) media to a USB drive. We will be rolling out the VHS and disk conversion process first, followed by the 8mm and Super 8 film reels, and then slides and other film.
Do you have a favorite library memory? One of them is feeling the joy of a story time groups laughter from a funny or unexpected book.
What do you wish people knew about Lafayette County Libraries? The libraries in this county put a lot of work into providing the best services possible with small budgets. They find creative ways to “make it work” and collaborate well with one another and with other organizations. Help out your libraries’ budgets by checking out (and returning) materials.
What’s something people might be surprised to learn about libraries? We strive to include materials and programs that our communities want, so don’t be afraid to politely ask about possibilities.
What is something you have coming up on the calendar? We are collaborating with the ADRC to offer a Memory Screening event from 11am-3pm on Monday, June 1 and a 6-week “Boost Your Brain” workshop on Thursdays starting June 11 from 1:00-2:30 p.m. I am also excited for “The Mammoth Hunter” presentation designed for people school aged through adulthood on July 21, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. We hope to have you join us!
