Morel mushroom season began a touch early this year but is likely to continue in some places well into and throughout May. Finding and pickling will continue to become more and more difficult with continued vegetation growth and leaf litter remaining on forest floors. Look, too for signs someone has already picked an area by telltale hollow stem stumps left in the ground. Don’t let that deter searching. Many mushrooms are missed. Walk up and down hills in prime areas. Walk and look around elm and apple trees by travelling clockwise and then counterclockwise around likely trees; and do the same thing a second time. Don’t just scan but look directly at tiny portions as though searching for a particular puzzle piece.
