Twelve Lafayette County Youth Complete Gearing Up for Safety" Program

DARLINGTON – Lafayette County is proud to announce the successful completion of the Gearing Up for Safety program by twelve local youth. This hands-on agricultural safety course equips young people with essential knowledge and skills for working safely with farm equipment and around agricultural environments.

Participants completed all in-class requirements, passed both the written and driving tests, and engaged in meaningful discussions about real-world farm scenarios. A highlight of the program was learning directly from local farmer and community collaborator Chad Gleason of Gleason Cattle Company Meats, who generously shared his expertise, personal experiences, and practical safety insights.

“Programs like Gearing Up for Safety are successful because of strong community collaboration,” organizers shared. “When local experts step forward to support youth education, it strengthens not only the program but the entire agricultural community.”

The curriculum emphasized: Safe operation of tractors and machinery Understanding PTO hazards and equipment blind spots, Emergency response awareness, responsible decision-making in farm environments, Hands-on driving practice and equipment handling

By completing the program, these twelve youth demonstrated responsibility, maturity, and a commitment to safe practices-skills that will serve them well whether they work on family farms, assist neighbors, or pursue future agricultural careers.

Agricultural safety education is especially important in rural counties like Lafayette, where many young people grow up around machinery, livestock, and active farm operations. Programs like this help reduce preventable injuries and empower youth with confidence and competence.

The Lafayette County Extension Office extends its gratitude to all volunteers, families, and community collaborators who made this year’s program possible. Special thanks go to Chad Gleason for his time, mentorship, and dedication to supporting the next generation of agricultural leaders.
