The Driftless Reading Academy is closing its doors in May, bringing to an end more than three years of committed service to students and families in the Argyle area.
Lynn Rossing, the DRA’s Executive Director, said the decision was a difficult one, made as she plans to spend more time with family in Portland, Oregon.
Since its founding, the Academy has provided reading instruction to learners of all ages, with a focus on helping students build strong literacy skills and confidence. Operating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the organization has been guided by a dedicated board of directors and supported by a network of generous donors and community partners.
“Leading the Driftless Reading Academy has been a great honor, Lynn said. “The work we did together was important because it mattered to the families we served.”
Board members Ginny Bean, Eva Denny, Jennifer Detra, Steve Engles, Dan Harrigan, Rick Van De Graaff, and Nicole Zimmerman, played a central role in shaping the Academy’s programs and mission. Together, they helped create a space where students could develop not only reading skills, but also a lasting love of learning.
The Academy was made possible through the support of organizations such as the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, Argyle Lions Club, Argyle Women’s Club, Kundert’s Main Street Market, and the Schlecht Family Foundation, along with many individual donors. The Argyle-Apple Grove Lutheran Church also provided an affordable space for the Academy, offering what Lynn described as “a welcoming and supportive home.”
While the closure marks the end of an important chapter, there is a sense that the Academy’s impact will continue. As the Argyle Public Library prepares to move into a larger space in the Argyle Community Center this fall, it will take ownership of the Academy’s furnishings, books, and materials.
“It means a great deal to know these resources will continue to serve local families,” Lynn said. “In that way, the Academy’s work will continue.”
Reflecting on the organization’s journey, Lynn expressed deep gratitude for the community’s support.
“We built this together,” she said. “It has been an honor to work with so many wonderful students and families, and I’ll always carry that with me.”
