The Blanchardville Woman’s Club took artwork done by 7th and 8th grade students from Mrs. Nancy Huffman’s art class to the General Federation of Women’s Clubs-Wisconsin (GFWC-WI) Helen Mears Art Contest. The artwork was displayed and judged at the GFWC-WI Southern Prairies District Spring Convention in Kenosha, WI on April 11 along with others from the District (Monroe, Beloit, Burlington, East Troy, Pleasant Prairie, and Kenosha).

Many wonderful comments were made about the talent of these student artists! Two of the students, Raelee Hampton and Hadley Syse received first place and second place, respectively, in the Painting/Drawing Category.

The Helen Mears Art Contest was started in 1927 to honor Helen Farnsworth Mears (1871-1916), who was a famous Oshkosh born sculptor. Her artwork is displayed at the US Capitol, Smithsonian, Madison State Capitol, and other national and state collections. The contest, which is for 2-D Painting/Drawing and 3-D Sculpture, was created to encourage artistic talent and recognize the achievement of student artists.
