Susan Burke Honored with Rural Health Ambassador

DARLINGTON – Lafayette Hospital + Clinics is proud to announce that Susan Burke has been recognized with the Rural Health Ambassador Award, presented by Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative (RWHC), in recognition of her extraordinary dedication to rural health care and decades of service to the Lafayette County community.

“Susan is an exceptional individual whose decades-long commitment to Lafayette Hospital + Clinics-formerly Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County-has made a profound and lasting impact on our patients, staff, and entire community,” said Sally Blackbourn, Director of Nursing. “Her passion for rural health and unwavering advocacy for our organization exemplifies the spirit of this award.”

Susan began her distinguished career as a physical therapist in the hospital’s therapy department and later became the department’s first Rehab Manager. In that role, she developed policies, protocols, and workflows that helped transform the department into the comprehensive, high-quality rehabilitation service it is today. Her leadership established a strong foundation for future growth, innovation, and technological advancement, improving care for both inpatient and outpatient populations.

Over more than 40 years of service, Susan became a cornerstone of Lafayette Hospital + Clinics. Her impact extended well beyond rehabilitation services as she provided oversight and direction for the organization’s safety and emergency management programs. Through her leadership, the hospital strengthened collaboration with local fire departments, EMS providers, law enforcement agencies, and community partners, enhancing emergency preparedness throughout the region.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Susan came out of retirement to lead the organization’s emergency management response during one of the most challenging periods in modern health care. Working closely with local municipalities and the Lafayette County Health Department, she coordinated education, resources, and vaccination efforts that were instrumental in protecting the health and safety of the community.

Susan also played a vital role during the development of Lafayette Hospital + Clinics’ new facility. Serving as a trusted ambassador for the project, she helped educate community members about the benefits and features of the new hospital. As an active contributor to the Foundation’s Capital Campaign, she strengthened community engagement and support through extensive outreach efforts.

Throughout her career, Susan has remained a passionate advocate for rural health care and an active supporter of the Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative. Her decades of leadership, service, and community involvement embody the true spirit of a Rural Health Ambassador.

Her legacy continues to shape Lafayette Hospital + Clinics, inspire staff, and strengthen the health and well-being of the entire Lafayette County community.

Congratulations to Susan Burke on receiving the Rural Health Ambassador Award.
